I took a wondrous walk today in the sparkling, snow-covered woods around our farm, and as I entered the deeper woods, these words magically popped into my mind . . .

Project 365 – Day 31 – Remembering the Challenger January 30, 2011

Janaury 28th was the 25th anniversary of the Challenger catastophe, as well as our son’s 27th birthday.

Do you remember where you were on that fateful day–January 28, 1986?

I remember that fateful day quite vividly. It was our son’s second birthday and I was nursing him on the couch at the time. The news came on, and as tears streamed down my face, I continued to nurse our little boy, thinking how could our lives go on as normal (celebrating his second birthday) as other’s lives were forever changed?

 I feel many young children lost some of their innocence that day. I can’t believe that was 25 years ago and that our then-little boy, Jonathan, is now celebrating his 27th birthday!

Cliff Potter:  I was at the Air Guard base in Orange.. It was lunch time and I was picking up new combat boots for the weekend drill coming up.. We watched it live , Very sad.. He uncle from Waterbury CT worked for SNET and he was down there and watched the horror live. When there is ice in Florida you dont launch rockets.

Jill Kaliszewski What a sad day! I was in class (at dhhs) when it happened, but lots of students were watching the launch live with their classes. It was such a tragic event, watching christa’s family as the confusion ensued for so long. It seemed to take forever to announce what we all knew had happened…like time stood still. On a happy note, if you haven’t yet been to the Christa McAuliffe Planetarium in NH, you MUST check it out! A wonderful tribute to her memory.

Nancy Lappie I was working for the Cleveland Co. School system in NC and on the highway going to one of the school that I served when I heard. Will never forget! A teacher on board had been very important to those involved in education !

Eileen Lois It’s amazing how clearly we remember where we were and what we were doing on that day. I remember we were finishing up building our house and I was washing the kitchen floor as I listened to the radio. That’s when the news about the Challenger came on.

Was at work. Woman I worked with heard on radio what happened. Was very soon after explosion & there was word from radio the crew may have survived & rescue operation was launched. I ran across street to a deli I knew had a t.v. Saw the re-…play. Knew immediatly there would be no rescue operation. Only 2 days previous had a conversation with a friend who was an engineer at Sikorsky. He was telling me about a friend of his who was an engineer at NASA & was involved with the Challenger mission. The guy was major p.o.’d over the pressure from D.C. to get the mission launched. My Sikorsky friend said his friend never said another word about that mission. Ever.See More

It just doesn’t stop!

It snows . . .

. . . and snows . . .

. . . and snows!

We’re up to our bellies in snow . . .

Our sleds are covered in snow . . .

In fact, our little corner of New England has broken ALL snowfall records for any January of any year, since weather records were kept!

We’re bringing in the big guns for snow removal, too . . .

But. . . my favorite snow of all is the vast, virgin stretch of pure white that remain untouched by anyone or anything . . .
