Cookie Swap: What’s your favorite Christmas Cookie? December 20, 2009

I’m joining in on the Christmas Cookie Recipe Swap that Farmer’s Daughter is hosting at her blog.  Why not join in by sharing the recipe of your very favorite Christmas cookie?

Believe me, a virtual recipe swap is way easier than the traditional cookie swap!

My very favorite Christmas Cookie has to be my own Mom’s Snowball recipe.  I made these last night as we were awaiting the first big snowfall of the season.  It just seemed like the right thing to do!

They’re easy, yummy, and they disappear quickly!

Mema’s Snowball Cookies

1 cup margarine

1/2 cup confectioner’s sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla

2-1/2 cups flour

1/2 cup nuts (walnuts or pecans, chopped or ground)

1/4 teaspoon salt (I usually leave this out)

(Extra confectioner’s sugar for coating cookies)

Cream together margarine, sugar, vanilla.  Mix in flour and nuts.  Hand form into balls and bake in 350 degree F oven for 8-10 minutes.  As soon as they come out of the oven, roll in a bowl of confectioner’s sugar to coat.

Yum, yum!  Enjoy warm or cold (if they last that long!)

Bursting with Pride! March 28, 2009

It’s not a secret that Abbie over at Farmer’s Daughter is my daughter in real life!  That being said, can I brag just a little?

Abbie was recently recognized as a “Woman Taking the Lead to Save our Planet” by the League of Women Voters.   She was honored at a  reception where she was lauded for all her efforts in Environmental Education as well as how she lives her everyday life as a role model for her students, family, and community.  Read all about by clicking here.

I couldn’t help but notice that,  of the small group of six women honored, Abbie was by far the youngest.  Other recipients were about twice her age, so I can’t help but think this is just the beginning of great things for Abbie!  So proud of you, honey!

Launching a New Blog! March 23, 2009

Abbie over at Farmer’s Daughter (and my daughter in real life, as many of you know) and I are so excited to be collaborating on a new blog for our family’s 12th generation family farm, Rose Orchards.  To view it, please click here or cruise on over to:

Tractor-drawn hayrides around the farm are a favorite fall activity!

Frozen custard lovers line up at the ice cream window, next to the bags of freshly-picked Macoun apples.

The water wheel barn, complete with fish pond, is another favorite place to visit, also home to our newest member of the family, Annabelle!

Do stop by our new Rose Orchards blog and let us know what you think!

We hope you enjoy reading about our latest “green”  experiments with straw hay bale gardening for fruits and vegetables!

3 Generations January 3, 2009

I am often inspired by the generations around me, both older and younger, and this holiday season was no exception.

My  Mom (center) has the most positive attitude of any 86-year-old I know.  Recently, she wanted to show a granddaughter who lives in Texas how much she enjoyed her Christmas gift of a new “cowgirl” hat, so she posed for this picture with horses on her own farm.

Despite being robbed of her sight by glaucoma over the years, she manages to be extremely agile, upbeat, and pretty darn technologically proficient.  Recently, we finally convinced her that she could use a cell phone (for her safety) after she accidentally locked herself in the chicken coop and had to crawl out the tiny “chicken door.”  Now, she uses her cell for enjoyment as well when she discovered that she has “free” nights and weekends, calling long-time friends who now live further away.

While “Mema” can be pretty hip, my daughter, two generations younger, can also be very fashionably “old-fashioned.”    Abbie, also known as the Farmer’s Daughter, is another person who impresses me to no end, linking family values, social issues, and a purposeful lifestyle.  A teacher and environmentalist at heart, she “walks the talk,” living a green, old-fashioned lifestyle today, embracing family values, good old-fashioned cooking, growing and using local foods, sewing, knitting, and creating wonderful gifts of herself for those around her!

Each day I feel thankful for these incredible women around me.  Thank goodness for the three generations in our family!
